New Virginia Codes Effective Date

The 2021 Virginia Codes have been approved and are published in the Virginia Register on December 18, 2023. The effective date of the 2021 Uniform Statewide Building Code, Statewide Fire Prevention Code, Industrialized Building Safety Regulations, and the Amusement Device Regulations is January 18, 2024.

All existing projects, and applications for Building permits received prior to January 18, 2024 will be in observance of the 2018 codes.

Projects with Building permits applied for on, or after January 18, 2023 will be inspected in observance of the 2021 codes.

Any Applicant that would like to complete a project in observance of the 2018 code may do so for a period of one year after the effective date (January 18, 2024) by providing a written request with the application for Building Permit. If this request is not received at the time of application the permit, and the project will follow the 2021 code requirements.
